Leavitt Partners Summer Internship

Location: Salt Lake City, Utah
Description: Leavitt Partners, LLC is seeking summer interns interested in focusing on health policy and/or data research. Interns will have a variety of responsibilities including research, health policy analysis, assist with client deliverables and administrative duties in Leavitt Partners’ Salt Lake City office. This opportunity will provide the successful applicant with experience in quantitative and qualitative research of the health care system. The position is open to advanced undergraduate and graduate students and recent graduates.
Duration of Internship: The duration of the internship is negotiable, but for the best experience, internships should be conducted for a minimum period of twelve weeks between May and August.
Preferred Skills and Qualification:

  • Interested in health services research and public policy
  • Candidate for a degree in Public Policy, Public Health, Healthcare Management, Economics, Statistics, or other related area of concentration
  • Those interested in data should have knowledge in statistical methods and experience with statistical programming (Stata, R, etc.) 
  • Excellent research, verbal and written communication skills with the ability to translate complex finding to non-technical audiences 
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and strict timelines

The administrative assistant plays a pivotal role in the daily operations of the office, including travel arrangements, internal scheduling, external meeting requests, and file and contact management. The Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands Internship

Location: Salt Lake City, Utah

Description: The State of Utah’s Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry Fire and State Lands is announcing the recruitment of one student intern position to begin in the spring of 2016. This position will assist the Division in implementing a Fire Costs Evaluation Plan developed by Brigham Young University’s Master's of Public Administration program and specifically designed for the Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands.
The Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands is one of seven Divisions that comprise the State of Utah’s Department of Natural Resources. The Division is responsible for forest health, responding to wildfires and managing sovereign lands in the state. The Division responds to wildfires on state and private land ensuring that communities, watersheds, rangelands and wildlife habitats don’t suffer catastrophic losses. Foresters assist private landowners in promoting forest health and Sovereign Lands staff over see management of the beds of Utah’s navigable rivers and lakes.

Duties: Following the severe 2012 fire season, Governor Gary R. Herbert charged state land managers with the task of developing a cooperative strategy to reduce the size, intensity and frequency of catastrophic wildland fires in Utah. The Governor’s Catastrophic Wildfire Reduction Strategy was the result. Utah’s Catastrophic Wildfire Reduction Strategy aims to reduce wildland fire by supporting the three goals of the National Cohesive Strategy of; resilient landscapes, fire adapted communities, and response/suppression capacity. As this new and ambitious program is implemented, one challenge faced by the Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands will be to evaluate the success of the actions taken to reduce wildfire risk and the associated cost of wildfire suppression. Interns will assist Division staff with data collection, manipulation, and analysis. Please note that data collection may include field work involving the use of GPS. Additional duties include analyzing fiscal data, preparing reports, conducting research of peer-reviewed documents and general support of fire staff in relation to the Catastrophic Wildfire Reduction Strategy.

2016 Summer Internship Program at the Congressional Budget Office

Fiscal Analyst Position with the Joint Legislative Budget Committee (Job)

Description: The office of the Joint Legislative Budget Committee provides a full range of non-partisan fiscal and program analysis for the Arizona State Legislature.  We currently have an opening for a Fiscal Analyst, which is primarily an entry level position.  We seek individuals who have a Master's degree in Economics, Public Policy Analysis, Public Administration, Business Administration or a related field.

Characteristics of the Position: As part of an overall 25-person organization, the JLBC Staff employs fiscal analysts in pursuit of its mission.  Each of these individuals is responsible for particular agencies of state government and performs the following core functions: 
       Analyze agency budget requests and make recommendations on proposed spending levels. Testify during Appropriations Committee hearings of the Arizona House of Representatives and Senate. 
       Assist the Appropriations Committee members in their development of the state budget. 
       Draft all applicable legislation to implement the state budget. 
       Review and analyze other legislation with fiscal implications and prepare fiscal impact statements of such legislation, as requested by members of the Legislature. 
       Monitor implementation of agency budgets and provide advice and counsel to agency officials regarding legislative intent.  Visit assigned agencies to meet with department personnel and their budget staff to discuss both budgetary and operational matters. 
       Serve as a general resource to the Legislature on their assigned budgets and make suggestions for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of state government. 

While analysts work independently on individual agency budgets, they also collaborate in a supportive team-oriented environment in developing the overall state budget.
