Description:
KUER is seeking a highly motivated, energetic self-starter eager to build relationships on behalf of KUER at the University of Utah. The successful candidate will have the ability to lead by example as we build a deeper culture of philanthropy, developing a robust major corporate, and planned giving efforts to accompany our strong membership and on-air fundraising efforts.
The Director oversees all aspects of KUER’s fundraising, marketing, and community engagement programs including individual, corporate and foundation giving; major gifts and planned giving; on-air fund drives; outreach events and fundraising events; publications and social media. The Director designs, develops and implements fund raising strategies to meet the financial objectives of KUER and provides executive leadership as a liaison to the Advisory Board. This key executive is a leader of the team that represents KUER to donors, listeners and the community and state.
The Director is a senior manager on the KUER team and reports to the General Manager. He/she is is responsible for organizing and implementing KUER’s contributed income goals and serves as the organizational leader of all development and marketing efforts. He/She directs all department activities to solicit funds/donations from listeners, individuals, corporations, foundations, and government agencies to support KUER’s operations and ongoing capital needs. In addition, the Director directs the marketing and community outreach programs.
Responsibilities
1. Provide strategic leadership to achieve ambitious contributed revenue goals and integrate fundraising efforts designed to meet the financial objectives of KUER. Prepare annual and long-term development plans and evaluate plan implementation and outcomes.
2. Cultivates relationships with committed and potential donors, develops solicitation strategies and successfully secures donations on behalf of KUER.
3. Plans strategies and goals for all of KUER’s fund-raising and donor activities, including membership, program underwriting, corporate gift-giving, campaigns, planned giving, major gifts, grant acquisitions, special events and telemarketing. Activities may include directing and preparing federal grant applications.
4. Plans strategies and goals for all of KUER’s marketing, community engagement, social good, and volunteer programs. Activities include outreach events, hosting national events, publications, and community partnerships.
5. Sets departmental policies and procedures for meeting goals.
6. Plans and administers the departmental budget.
7. Recruits, hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates staff.
8. Prepares and analyzes market research to aid in fund-raising in cooperation with contract researchers and KUER Managers.
9. Meets with a variety of local, regional and national public broadcasting and advisory committees to coordinate fund-raising efforts and keep informed of community needs and industry trends.
10. Participates as a major component of on-air fund-raising activities.
11. Works closely with Production and Content department personnel to plan, coordinate, and implement effective on-air drives, to raise money for local programs, and perform outreach.
12. Oversees periodic campaigns to generate endowment and equipment funding for KUER, in
the amount of $1,000,000 or more.
13. Works with the KUER General Manger to coordinate activities with the KUER Advisory Board, attending Board and committee meetings.
14. Represent the development perspective and serve on the KUER Senior Management Team. Remain conversant with industry trends to create new fundraising channels and techniques.
15. Acts as KUER’s interface with the campus Central Development office.
16. Performs other duties as shall be assigned by the KUER General Manager.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or related area, or equivalency; eight years of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communications skills required.

Preferences
Ten years of related fund raising and management experience within Utah non-profits and donors preferred. Experience in public broadcasting is helpful. Knowledge of media trends, broadcasting, audience data and demographics is preferred.
Other preferences: local fundraising experience and familiarity with our communities and culture. Experience in the various areas of development such as corporate, foundation, underwriting, major gifts, capital campaigns, membership and special events strongly preferred.
Management experience should include financial/budget oversight, supervision, strategic planning, creating and implementing departmental programs, and evaluating the effectiveness of departmental systems and programs, particularly as it relates to donor relationships and solicitations.
The incumbent must demonstrate the ability to enthusiastically promote KUER to donors, listeners, community leaders and the general public. Demonstrated writing, analytical, verbal, organizational and human relations skills are critical. Presentation and public speaking experience required. The successful candidate must be able to collaborate and develop partnerships with volunteers, KUER board members, vendors, other NPR stations and community and corporate leaders.
