Dept of Treasury Internship - D.C.

The Western Hemisphere Office at the United States Department of the Treasury helps develop and guide U.S. economic policy engagement with Canada, Mexico, Brazil, other Central and South American countries, Haiti, and the Caribbean.  The office’s primary objectives include promoting strong, balanced, and sustainable growth in the region; advancing policy measures that support open trade and investment; encouraging the development of strong financial systems; and ensuring that all countries in the region fully participate in systems for global economic cooperation. It also plays a significant role in managing the U.S.-Brazil Economic and Financial Dialogue and U.S. engagement with Latin American regional initiatives.  Treasury’s activity on the Western Hemisphere is led by Deputy Assistant Secretary Leonardo Martinez-Diaz, and the office is directed by Matthew Mohlenkamp.

Duties:
The successful candidate will help the office in economic analysis to assist Treasury officials in the development of U.S. international economic policy toward the Western Hemisphere.  Specific tasks will include:
  • Collecting, analyzing, and presenting economic data in support of policy priorities;
  • Assisting with preparing reports and memos for senior Treasury officials;
  • Preparing regular updates of regional financial and currency market activity;
  • Conducting background research on relevant economic and financial issues;
  • Attending and reporting on official meetings in and outside of government;
  • Coordinating with other Treasury offices; and
  • Assisting with trip preparation and briefing books.

Requirements:
Candidates should have a solid understanding of international economics, finance, and development policy.  Candidates should also have strong quantitative, research, writing, organizational, spreadsheet, and communication skills; the ability to meet tight deadlines; talent in constructing well-reasoned arguments and extracting key data/information from large documents; and the capacity to work independently and as part of a team.  Specific knowledge of the region and of Spanish or Portuguese is helpful.  This position is unpaid and open to U.S. citizens only. 

What students will learn:
This internship will provide candidates the opportunity to learn about and contribute to the formation of public policy.  Students will become proficient at researching and compiling data using Bloomberg and Haver, as well as analyzing and presenting the data.  Students will learn how to draft talking points and prepare briefing materials, as well as how to make a point succinctly to busy senior officials.  Students will also have an opportunity to attend and report on relevant financial and economic seminars and conferences around Washington DC.
