Job Description
Intermountain Healthcare’s Urban South Region encompasses all of Utah County and includes three hospitals, several health centers and multiple physician clinics. Approximately 4,200 employees work daily to meet the healthcare needs of patients from within the region as well as those referred in from surrounding rural areas of the state.

The three hospitals in the region provide patients with excellent care in the healthcare setting of their choice. Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, located in Provo, is the largest hospital south of Salt Lake City and serves as a referral center for all of central Utah. It is a designated Level II Trauma Center and also features state-of-the-art cardiovascular, cancer, surgical and women’s and newborn services. American Fork Hospital, is a thriving community hospital that offers cancer, surgical and women’s and newborn services. Orem Community Hospital is the smallest facility with an outstanding birthing center and same-day surgery capabilities.
Intermountain Healthcare is a nationally recognized healthcare system of nonprofit hospitals and clinics that provides medical care to residents of the Intermountain West. Intermountain Healthcare has been repeatedly recognized as one of the top integrated healthcare delivery systems in the country.
The 10-12 week internship will begin in late May to early June, 2014.   The Hospital Administration Summer Internship augments classroom learning and prepares future healthcare leaders for opportunities upon graduation.

The incumbent will work directly with members of the leadership team on a variety of short-term strategic and operational improvement projects.  In addition, he/she will partner with an executive mentor, attend leadership meetings and participate in development workshops.

The internship provides a useful introduction to Hospital Administration's accountability to both, its patients and their families, its employees, as well as the surrounding community.
1.  Spends time with regional and facility leaders, department directors and managers in order to understand their business environment and existing critical issues. Assists them with projects as needed.
2.  Regularly attends Executive/Administrative Council Meetings and attends Governing Board Meeting, Medical Executive Meeting, and Physician Committee Meeting as appropriate.
3.  Selects and implements at least one project that allows for individual initiative and learning and is approved by the supervising Operations Officer.
4.  Assists with general administrative duties as they arise and other job related duties.
5.  Exhibits behaviors consistent with the INTERMOUNTAIN HEALTHCARE Mission, Vision, and Values.
Full time, 40 hours a week, Exempt temporary position.  Not a benefit eligible position.

Minimum Requirements
•     Bachelor's Degree.  Intermountain verifies both degree attainment and educational institution accreditation following an offer of employment.
•     Must have completed one year of a post-graduate degree program (preferably in Business or Health Services Administration).
•     Must demonstrate leadership ability and skills in critical thinking, strategic planning, analysis and systems thinking.
•     Must be proficient with business computer applications (i.e Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Access).
•     Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications
•     Preference given to students who are in the middle of their first and second year of their Master's program.
Salary
Pay is $19.02/hour

Intern #1 - a student with coursework in city planning and public administration
Focus for internship - the intern will help the Utah Housing and Community Development Division staff to update the database of local affordable housing plans and the RDA housing set-aside database, provide technical assistance to local planners to meet reporting requirements and update their plans, and work with local officials interested in affordable housing development.

Intern #2 - a student with coursework in local government public finance, accounting, or nonprofit financial operations 
Focus for internship - the intern will help the Utah Housing and Community Development Division staff in conducting a review of financial systems for HCDD funding recipients, their policies, and procedures to assure compliance with state and federal contract requirements.  Support HCDD’s auditing and compliance monitoring efforts.  

Intern #3 - a student with coursework in city planning and public administration 
Focus of internship - the intern will work with Utah Housing and Community Development Division staff to assist rural associations of government and local officials in planning for growth, assessing impacts from economic development, prioritizing local needs, establishing funding priorities, and coordinating planning efforts across municipal and state jurisdictions.   

Intern #4 - a student with coursework in public administration and program management
Focus of internship - the intern will work with the Utah Housing and Community Development Division staff to administer the Community Impact Fund (CIB) and support the CIB board including data compilation, fund analysis, legislative reporting, preparation of presentations, assistance to applicant communities, and application reviews. 


Interns are paid at $14 per hour and full-time through the summer beginning April 28, 2014 plus UTA passes.  The location is the Utah Housing and Community Development Division at 1385 South State Street in Salt Lake City.  HCDD may be interested in continuing the internships part-time into the 2014-15 academic year (working with each intern to accommodate their academic schedule).

Interns should have proficiency in EXCEL and the ability to learn and utilize other database programs.
