Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
This unpaid internship provides a learning opportunity for a student to work with a leading disaster preparedness organization. The ICDP Intern supports the Intermountain Center for Disaster Preparedness team in their efforts to improve and enhance the Center’s mission to be a Center of Excellence for integrated community-based disaster readiness and resilience through collaborative education, training, research.

The intern will:
1. be assigned one or more specific projects during the internship. Will work independently or as a member of a team to accomplish the tasks necessary to successfully complete the project.
2. produce an outcome that meets school requirements and demonstrates operational abilities
3. participate and be involved in a variety of learning projects: work with the members of the team to identify solutions and perform tasks that accomplish individual and team goals.
4. attend department meetings and actively participate in knowledge sharing as it relates to duties
5. gain knowledge and participate in the daily functions of the Center. By the end of the internship, the student will have experience most aspects of a disaster preparedness center.
6. work with the ICDP social media to keep it current

▪The selected intern would begin Spring semester (Jan - April 2017). This internship is parttime with hours that fall within the standard work day (8 am to 5 pm). Hours can be flexible within that time frame throughout the week.
▪The internship experience will be based at the Intermountain Center for Disaster Preparedness located in LDS Hospital.

Performance Audit Intern

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Under a lead auditor’s close supervision, Performance Audit Interns work for a minimum of one semester to assist in conducting performance audits and following up on previously issued audit reports of state agencies and programs. Interns gather information and help identify areas of inquiry, perform audit procedures to obtain evidence, prepare well-documented work papers, assess and formulate findings and appropriate recommendations in compliance with government auditing standards, and assess state agency efforts to implement recommendations made in audit reports. In addition, interns may orally communicate work results and draft written audit findings that meet professional and office standards for clarity and completeness. We will work with you to select a schedule within normal business hours that works best with your class schedule. As an intern, you can expect to gain the following:

Cookingham-Noll Management Fellowship

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Cookingham-Noll Management Fellowship is a two year experience that offers recent graduates of Public Administration (or related) Master’s programs a two year experience that gives fellows a “360-degree tour of the city.” This includes rotations in the City Manager’s Office, the Office of Management and Budget, and other departments of their choice. Fellows will also attend and participate in several meetings each week with the City Manager and other City leadership throughout their time as a fellow. This is a 2 year term, full-time, paid position with the City.

After the fellowship concludes, successful participants are recruited by departments to fill available city jobs, and many of our top-level executives began their career in this program.

Position involves staff assistance, administrative, and operational work on an entry level professional basis involving the application of research techniques to the study of departmental systems, policies, and practices.  Aides department and division personnel in handling assigned technical, supervisory, administrative, and operational matters. Assists assigned departmental personnel with current and long-range administrative and operational duties. Work also involves supervising small work groups as directed.

Finance Director

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the City Manager, the Finance Director oversees the Finance Department’s staff and Customer Service Division, which includes the Utility Billing and Municipal Court divisions. The Director manages budgets totaling $862,124 and a total of eight full-time employees. IT services are provided to the various City departments through a contract with a third party vendor. The Finance Director manages this contractual service.
The Accountant II, Budget and Finance Analyst, Customer Service Supervisor, and Information Technology contractor report directly to the Finance Director.

The City has developed the following goals and objectives for the Finance Department for 2017:

Finance
·        Implement partnership with new auditor
·        Oversee development on Annual CAFR and apply for GFOA CAFR award
·        Implement new transparency program from State Comptroller
·        Maintain GFOA budget award
·        Improve accounting procedures
·        Evaluate and improve financial controls and procedures
·        Develop a financial procedures manual
·        Transition from multiple bank accounts to a pooled cash system

Municipal Court
·        Continue work towards Level III Court Certification
·        Implement and plan to participate in the Texas Warrant Round-up
·        Continue to work with AMS and PD on collection of warrants
·        Further cross train UB office staff to help with the processing of cases
·        Increase community awareness of Municipal Courts’ Week
·        Evaluate system to allow defendants to receive notification of citation and pay ticket via smartphone

Utility Billing
·        Provide all UB forms on City website in a user-friendly format (coordinate with updating website)
·        Continue working with AMS on delinquent account collections
·        Develop customer reports with Asyst to improve efficiency
·        Support implementation of AMI system

Budge & Management Analyst I

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
·        Prepares and administers annual revenue and expenditure budgets and the five year financial forecast for an assigned group of departments or outside agencies.

·        Reviews, analyzes and makes recommendations regarding the fiscal information contained in departmental memos requesting City Council action.
·        Coordinates and monitors the implementation of new budget initiatives adopted by City Council; compiles and reviews implementation plans and monthly status updates.
·        Coordinates preparation and publication of proposed and adopted budget documents.
·        Develops detailed narrative explanations of changes in departmental budgets.
